every sickness and when it reaches that particular i llness the sick person regains health through the command of Allah. There is one illness however for which there is no cure and that is old age." (Alamghiri) Rule- Using any part of the human body as medicine is Haraam. (Alamghiri) It is also impermissible to use Haraam things as medicine as a Hadeeth has stated, "Allah has not kept Shifaa (cure) in Haraam things. " (Dun'e Mukhtaar, Raddul-Muhtaar) Rule- To use alcohol as medicine or to externally apply it to wounds and injuries is not allowed. Even animals should not be treated with alcohol. (Alamghiri) RlIle- Drugs, e.g. opium, etc are also not allowed to be used as medicine. (Bahare-Shariat) Rule- Dry things that bring on intoxication e.g. hemp, opium etc are not Naj is. Hence to use them externally as an ointment has no harm as intoxication does not occur by doing so. (Bahare-Shariat) Rule- It is not allowed to use medicines for tenninating a pregnancy or having a mid-wife doing so, irrespective ofwether the foetus has formed or not. However if there is truly a valid reason e.g. a pregnant woman has a milk-drinking infant and the father does not have enough money to employ a nurse to feed the child or a nurse cannot be found then the pregnancy can be terminated due to the fear of the infant passing away caused by the milk in the woman becoming dried up by pregnancy. However this can only be done on condition that the body parts of the foetus e.g. hand, leg,etc have not been fonned and its period is 1 20 days (4 month!») . (Raddul-Muhtaar) Therefore terminating it before this time is perrnissible. 1 . When s(·: ing someone in an i llness or in a condition that is not liked then the following dua should be read.
