Rule- types of covering are Sunnat for men Lifaafa, Izaar and is Sunnat for a woman to be given five coverings as Kafan , Lifaafa (sheet), Izaar (Tahband), Qamees (also known as a kaji1i)+ ourhni and Seenah Band. (GeneralBooks) Besides these coverings placing a tahband or handkerchiefin the Kafni is Bidat and prohibited. Rule- The lenght ofthe five coverings follow. Lifaafa- It should be more then the height ofthe Mayyit so that it can be tied at both sides. Izaar- From the top till the feet meaning equal to the height of the Mayyit. Qamees- The Kafni should be from the neck until below the knees and equal from the front and back both. The practice of laahils to keep the back part less is incorrect. It must also not have any slit or sleeves. The opening for a woman's Kafni is at the chest. Ourhni- This should be three hands length meaning one and a half yards. Seenah Band- From the breasts until the navel and it is best if it is until the thighs. (Alamghiri, Raddul-Muhtaar) To keep Surrna or a Hair Brush in the Kafan is Haraam. (Fataawa Razvia) Method ofdressing the Kafall The body ofthe Mayyit should be wiped after Ghusal so that the Kafan does not bec9me wet. Then the Kafan should be smoked (with Lobaan -I etc) either tnree, five, or seven times not more than that. The Kafan 1 23
