without their husbands or Mahrams. This rule i s not specific to the journey for Hajj but any j ourney of one day undertaken without this stipulation makes her a sinner. Once the Fardh has been completed, traveling excessively is not appropriate for a woman as her being in Purdah as much as possible is best. AHadeeth records that after theHoly Prophet made the Hajj of his blessed wives fulfilled, he said, "This Hajj is completed and the mats of the house is after this."This does not mean that a second Hajj is not allowed for women but it is better ifthey do not undertake the journey. (FataawaRazvia) Rule- It is a condition that a woman is accompanied by a Mahram on a journey, irrespective if she is old or young, virtuous or weak. AMahram is that male with whom Nikah is Haraam forever for that woman. This prohibition stems from blood ties, e.g. father, son, brother, maternal or paternal uncle etc, from milk fostering, e.g. Razaai brother, father etc or from in-law relationships e.g. father in-law, husbands son from another marriage. (Durre-Mukhtaar) Rule- I t is a condition that the Mahramwith whom the woman can travel with beAaqi l and Baaligh to protect her. It is also a specification that the Mahram is not a shameless Faasiq. To travel with such a transgressor is Haraam because i ffaced with a situation ofprotection, then his being or not being there is equal. (Durre-Mukhtaar) Rule- Traveling forHajj is for the attainment ofThawaab but going for it without a Mahram orwith a shameless Mahram, adopted son or father will incur sin being recorded for every step taken instead of reward even ifby going without a Mahram and performing Hajj is sufficient for the Fardh to be completed. (FataawaRazvia) Rule- It is not waaj ib on a woman to make Nikah to go for Hajj i fshe is without a husband or does not have any trust worthy Mahrams. If she has a Mahram then she should go with him to complete the Fardh Hajj even ifher husband does not give her permission. The husband has the choice of prohibition though in the case of a Nafl or Sunnat Hajj . (lauharaa) 1 70
