MURTAD AMurtad is that person who makes Kufr, though he or she professes the Kalima, either by the fact that he or she was a Muslim before but then publicly turned away from Islam and became a rej ecter ofthe Kalima or still professes it, calls himself or herself a Muslim but rejects a Zarooriyaate- Deen (wmething integral to be accepted in theDeen) . In short uttering a statement ofKufr in which there is no need to make an interpretation, making fun ofthe Deen or the teachings ofIslam even if done as a j oke according to the Ulema, is a Kufr and the person who does so becomes a Kaafir even if he or she says that this belief is not possessed by him or her. Some actions also cause a Muslim to become a Kaafir, e.g. making Sajda for an idol, throwing the Quraan in an unclean area etc. Similarly committing those actions which absolutely negate Islam causes a person to become a Kaafir, e.g. disrespecting any Prophet, the Quraan or Kaaba etc. Zarooriyaate-Deen are those rules and beliefs known by all to be brought by the Holy Prophet � from his Rabb e.g. the monotheism of Allah �, Prophethood of the Ambiyah 8:.41\, Jannat, Jahannam, Ras5G.ollalah .ft!, is Khatamun-na-Biyeen (there is no Prophet after Rassoollalah�) etc In short, after Islam, to reject any such rule or belief of the Deen is Irtidaad and the person who does so is known as a Murtadd . Irtidaad (retraction) is an indecent kind of Kufr and the Quraan speaks of such people, "Then their works shall go in vain in the world and in the hereafter and they are the people of hell and will abide in it." (Surah Baqarah, Verse 2 17) AMUl1ad will not receive any Thqwaab for Ibaadat i n the Aakhirat, and his Nikah cannot be made with a Muslim. There is no inheritance also 253
