Chapter Fifty Three
The Reports Pertaining to the Age of the Messenger of Allah

378. ‘Abdullāh ibn Abbās narrated: “The Prophet (peace be upon him) remained in Makkah for thirteen years during which he received revelation, and in Madīnah for ten years. He passed away at the age of sixty three.” [440]

Ibn Hajar al-Asqalānī said,

The Prophet (peace be upon him) was forty years old when he received the revelation on the first occasion and it was mentioned previously in the chapter of revelation that the revelation was in the month of Ramadān. The most famous and correct view is that he was born in the month of Rabī’ al-Awwal.

Abdul Rahman al-Mubarakfūrī said,

Al-Tirmidhī reported three narrations regarding the age of the Prophet (peace be upon him) at the time of his passing. The first hadīth states that he passed away when he was sixty three years old, the next hadīth states that he was sixty years old and the last hadith states that he was sixty five years old. Al-Nawawī offered a good reconciliation between these three hadīths as he stated, “The most correct and most widely accepted view is that he (peace be upon him) was sixty three years old when he passed and the hadīth stating his age as sixty was mentioned in respect to decades and not to give an exact number. The other hadīth was just a confusion on the part of Ibn Abbās for ‘Urwah rejected this statement of his and said that Ibn Abbās erred as he did not accompany the Prophet as much as other companions and did not witness the beginning of his prophethood.” The scholars agreed that he (peace be upon him) was born on a Monday and died on a Monday but they differed upon which day of the month he was born, whether it was the second, eighth, tenth or twelfth of Rabī’ al-Awwal.

379. Jarīr narrated that he heard Mu’āwiyah saying in a speech he delivered: “The Messenger of Allāh (peace be upon him) passed away at the age of sixty three. Likewise, Abū Bakr and ‘Umar passed away at the same age. I am [currently] sixty three.” [441]

Alī al-Qārī said,

Given the age of passing of the Prophet (peace be upon him) and his two companions, Mu’āwiyah expected to die at the same age. In Jāmi’ al-Usūl it is stated that Mu’āwiyah passed away at the age of seventy eight and it was said at eighty six years old. Mirak said, “He hoped to die at the age of sixty three just like the Prophet (peace be upon him) and his two companions but that did not happen as he died when he was nearly eighty years old.”

380. Aisha narrated: “The Prophet (peace be upon him) passed away when he was sixty three years of age.” [442]

381. ‘Abdullāh ibn ‘Abbās narrated: “The Messenger of Allāh (peace be upon him) passed away when he was sixty five years old.” [443]

382. Daghfal ibn Handhalah narrated: “The Prophet (peace be upon him) passed away when he was sixty five years of age.”

Al-Tirmidhī said: “Daghfal did not hear any reports from the Prophet (peace be upon him) directly, though we know that he lived during the lifetime of the Prophet (peace be upon him).” [444]

383. Narrated by Rabī’a ibn Abī Abdul Rahman: “I heard Anas ibn Mālik describing the Prophet (peace be upon him) saying, ‘He was neither too tall nor short; neither absolutely white nor brown; his hair was neither very curly nor completely straight. The divine revelation was revealed to him when he was forty years old. He stayed ten years in Makkah, and stayed in Madīnah for ten more years. When he died, he was sixty years old and had [approximately] twenty grey hairs in his head and beard.” [445]

384. Anas ibn Mālik reports the same through a different route.
